In our description of us, we mentioned the stitch ripper. A useful but most hated instrument. Well this is a cautionary tale in which this little instrument plays a significant role. At the beginning of last year I joined a Facebook group with the aim of reducing my stash... Stashbusting.... you've heard all about it before. Well this February, the lovely ladies organising the group set up a competition. The itention was to really get us sewing and cracking on reducing our stashes. The challenges were to sew something red, something from the fabric you disliked most, the largest or the oldest fabric in your stash. Spurred on to finish a red cord skirt I had cut out half or last year, I got down to work.

I had picked a pattern from Handmade Kultur. It is an indie German magazine that covers sewing, knitting, handicrafts as well as woodwork and such stuff. There are the obilatory tales communal gardening, recycling and the like. I really like it, but up until now I have only looked at the pictures. The Romatik Skirt.....looks pretty doesn't it.

Handmade Kultur

I started it in red elephant cord. I cut out the outer skirt pieces and managed to cut out two against the nap. Annoyed I threw it in my UFO bin and ignored it for a year. At the beginning of the month I hauled it out again and recut those pieces. I patiently overlocked them and thought I was almost there. Then I discovered I hadn't cut out all the pieces needed. Lining, facings, ruffle were still missing. So I traced the pattern and lost several pieces several times (kids ripped them, dogs ate them, I misplaced them, I am sure someone used them as firelighters....). I cut the facings, found some contrasting lining fabric in my stash and pulled out the fabric I had bought for the ruffle many moons ago and it was too short. I trawelled fabric shops and discovered it had all
been snapped up.

I went back to my stash to look for a different piece.
Found one, cut it, to discover it was too short.... pieced it together
in three.... accepted that my hem line was going to be shorter than
planned....

So cutting down, sewing left to go. I sewed the outer layer together and then got to the facings. It took me an hour and quite a bit of internet research til I found The Daily Sew showing me on a photo how to attach the facing to the lining.
(I managed to sew one of the pleats the wrong way but decided on a global scale it is quite irrelvant. Time will tell).

The next step was sewing the loose stitches for the ruffle.... my thread broke ten times. I unpicked it three times and rethreaded my machine five times. In the end, I ripped out the thread from both the skirt and the machine and the bobbin and chucked it in the bin. I then went to my threads and chucked out all Ikea thread. I know people who love it. I hate it (this is my third bad experience) and have vowed never again.

I sewed the ruffle to the lining (which has facing attached) as the instructions in the pattern said. I then pinned the hem as I want to be able to play around with them before finally deciding. I then pinned the lining into the skirt. I picked it up, just about to be dlighted that I was going to get it finished that night and discovered to my horror that the ruffle was sewn in the wrong way aound.

I went to bed. Next morning I unpicked it. and repinned it.
Now it is waiting for me to sew it, attach the facings to the skirt, trim off the hem of the outer skirt, add the zip, hem and then wear. And of course enter into that competition. Maybe I get lucky and I win some thread ;-)YveeBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16652812010457616174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1690145426121846618.post-52275960393079576632015-02-16T13:14:00.000-08:002015-02-26T07:24:29.866-08:00Green Bean - Stangenbohne

As Britta mentioned we're right in the middle of the fifth season here. The highlight starting on Thursday and continuing til Monday (or Tuesday if you are in some remote parts of the country. Remote takes on a different meaning at this time of year.

Although we moved away from proper Karneval to the South a couple of years ago. Where we now live, we have Fastnet (in proper German you would call it Fastnacht as in the the night before abstinence). Here there are fewer mottos. My kids thankfully could choose to be whatever they wanted. Thing Two just took something out of the dressing-up box. Thing One on the other hand is a completely different candidate. He decided that as they will be celebrating in and outside, it would be good to be something that he could wear over his coat. He has a green coat. And whilst he was considering it, he was wearing green jeans too. He likes his colours (a bit like this kid). Mummy, what is green and long? I quickly decided not to answer this, not shooting myself in the foot with crazy costume ideas. Mummy, I am going to be a green bean. So a green bean. To be honest, I could have just said, we'll paint your face and you are done (he's tall and thin). But you know what, I hate those face paints and you need a costume. I started to surf the net, looked on pinterest. I found these cuties.Perfect.

So now I had the idea I had to run with it. Somehow my projects start off like one thing in my head and then mutate all by themselves (see the Shirt Quilt pattern- coming later). I decided to make a tunic with elasticated sides to go over either a coat or a t-shirt. But then I had to buy the fabric and then decided to make a top that could be worn everyday too. I used the Toni pattern which in fleece sewed up like a dream (fleece is not my normal choice!). I lined the hood with some lovely jersey my mum gave me for the boys for Xmas. This pattern is going to become a staple in our house.

I sewed the hoodie which was well recieved and then put on the beans (I think they look more like peas) afterwards. Once the day is over, I well intend to get out the stitch ripper and replace them with a big fat star!

Here in the Rheinland (along the River Rhine for all those outside Germany) we have a fifth season. Karneval! And of course our pre-school celebrates as much as everyone else. We call it keeping up the traditions ;)

If you live in traditional Karneval areas, there is no way you can get out of it. For people from other places (like a friend who moved here from the US three years ago) it is often incomprehensible. It doesn't matter if you are into it as a grown-up, kids have to have costumes. Our pre-school celebrates every year under a different motto. This year it is "Carneval of Animals"!

Leider nein...

Deep down I hoped that the kids would take a costume from their dressing-up box (I will let you peep in there one day). Sadly not.

The big kid decided two weeks ago he was going to be a bat. I admit to looking in the local shops. They only had Batman costumes. That would have been right up his street as he only takes his Spiderman costume off to sleep at the moment. But that would not have been in keeping with the theme.

As I don't have very much free sewing time right now, I had to come up with a fast solution. I decided to pimp a hoodie. To add a little more "bat" to the whole thing, I split the hood at the front and added ears. To make them more stabile, I added volume fleece: In an old Ottobre I found a sweatshirt with bat details. It inspired me to add the embrodiery on the back. To start with I sewed in wings between the arms and the sides, but took them out again. It was just too much

To make the whole thing a little cooler for my almost school child, I used the Hero Hood from Yvonne alias leni pepunkt. You can find it on her website (and it was in her advent calendar).

Hier das fertige Kostüm am Kind:

So here it is:
She (a dress pattern has to be female!) is a pattern that I have been pussyfooting about for ages. She is going to help me sew three wonderful dresses (or at least that is the plan!). Two for work, one for the winter in a dark brown wool and one for the summer in a lightweight grey and black patterned cotton-mix. And the third one in a traditional German woven blue and white check with red/orange details. The third one is a special dress. I shall tell you more about that one when I get to it though. Just let me tell you it has to be a wow to live up to the occasion I am intending to wear it to.

The fabric for this dress trio was all preloved fabric that people didn't sew up. The dark brown wool came from a charity shop fairly nearby that always has a tempting stock of yardage (or should that be meterage). I bought it thinking boy's trousers but the rate they get through trousers at the moment, the only thing I would be prepared to sew is leather with steel kneecaps! So after I got over the boys's trouser idea, it went into the stash for a while. The great thing is, now I can count it as stashbusting.

The grey and black cotton came from my "Nähtreff". More about the actual sewing evening itself another time. In November last year a local theatre put on a production of "The Fiddler on the Roof". There was a call out in the local paper for fabric and notions to make costumes with. The response was amazing. People brought in truckloads of wonderful fabric and notions. The lace.... people gave their buttons collections... well all that was left after sewing the costumes went into the Nähtreff stash! This lovely cotton was left over and asked if it wasn't used, if it could be earmarked for me. Lucky me... it wasn't needed. So it will become a lovely little Cambie for me. Lucky me. Despite picking it up this year, I reckon as I asked for it last year, that it does not count as a new addition this year.

As I am making three dresses and using lovely fabric, I decided to make a muslin. That allows me to play with the bodice length too. Madame long body here. I even chose a muslin fabric with a stripe so I could see what went on with the stripes for the third dress.YveeBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16652812010457616174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1690145426121846618.post-14250902800418942012015-01-21T05:22:00.001-08:002015-01-21T05:22:42.843-08:00Stash Building IIn one Facebook group I am in (of the two!) we stashbust. I have pledged not to buy any more fabric this year or last year. Well like nearly all of the others in the group, last year I failed. This year is fairly new, so I am doing alright so far! Having said that I did not buy very much last year.
The reason why I have made this pledge is because I have a ridicious stash. It's size came about because of two separate "incidents".

The first one was an award winning Ebay score. A woman who had inherited her mother's and aunt's house was selling off it's contents. Both of them were textiles teachers and they obviously both had a bit of a fabric problem going on. I think I was one of her first customers and got a Volvo estate boot (trunk for you, Americans) full of fabric for 2€.

I used to have another blog... and here is what I wrote back then in 2010:

When I went to collect it
.......Wasting time looking at material on Ebay wasn't quite so wasted. Look at
the loot in this boot. 2€! I challenge you to get a better deal! There
are some wild, some pretty and some pretty grim (70's nylon) pieces in
there. And there are some that are already calling out to be turned into
clothes. Clothes for me, clothes for the Things, clothes for Karneval,
clothes for little girls (don't have any of those at home)..... I shall
have lots of fun! I do have one question though, what do you do with
three meters of purple (or red or yellow or brown) nylon? Any takers?

After I had got it home......

I told you about my award winning ebay steal.
Now I am washing and airing it. Good that the weather is so hot (and
now windy too). I now have a nice pile of material, such a nice pile
that I have no idea where I am going to store it. Yesterday I ironed a
lot and whilst doing that I thought about the women who's stash this had
been. Did she have things in mind when she bought each piece or did she
just buy them? Some have obviously been reduced or pieces with faults.
What were they like as a people? Did they sew for themselves, for her family,
for friends?

There
are two ways of looking at this collection of material (I don't know if
there was more): it is what is left over after a lifetime of crafting,
all the really nice pieces have been sewn, or there are plans and dreams
in still in there. I think the truth, as ever, is somewhere in between.
Some of the pieces literally shout out about what they want to become. A
pretty pink summer skirt, a child's winter fleece, a Barbie dress (??
that must be the material talking as I haven't come up with such things
before!!), a pair of grey autumn trousers. I am sure you will end up
seeing some of these things here.

Some
of the pieces pay hommage to a certain period of time. There are pieces
of spun nylon in purple, red, bright yellow and bright blue. There are
some horrible beige nylon with light blue flowers raised on the surface.
A bit like flocked wallpaper. In this heat it doesn't just look
horrible, it makes my skin crawl. What would you do with them? The only
idea I had was to ring a clothing museum and ask if they could use them.

From this haul, I have made a mathematics dress (see top photo, blue and black material on the left hand side), the tent part of a play tent for Thing Two and a Christmas tree skirt from some of the lime green on the left. All the nylon and fabric that made my skin crawl as well as a good lot of patterns that I felt I would never even like, nevermind love, I gave away. Proud of myself on that one!

As to the second "incident", I'll tell you about that another time....

, YveeBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16652812010457616174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1690145426121846618.post-22509458207990244032015-01-19T08:43:00.001-08:002015-01-19T08:43:28.706-08:00Baby Blankets2014 saw a old trend being revived by my friends. All of a sudden another round of babies were born. Numbers two and three were born all over the place. A completely natural thing you are probably thinking. Well , yes, only it was quiet on that scene for a while.

Being such a lazy friend, instead of sewing up complicated Welcome Baby parcels, I just sewed up some cosy blankets. I reckoned that by the time you get to Number Two ot Three you are probably swimming in stuff anyway! And I know that when I had Thing Two I was actually very happy to be able to reused some of the clothes/blankets/toys that I loved but had been put to one side. But you know, I am married to a man who is a Number Three. A favourite of the family stories is one where he was so chuffed to get something new and something that noone else had before. Having said that I am a Number One (and Only...) and I got plenty of pre-loved clothes! Anyway seconds and thirds should have at least one new thing.

And so the blanket workshop opened:

How can I get my little girl to wear her brother's things? The problem... the right size, the oh-so-wrong colour... And then I remembered a pattern I have for hair clips, that I discovered on one of my favourite blogs. Ideal for these slippers!

Hier das Ergebnis:
Here is the result:

...and because the slippers were recieved so thankfully, I made a few hair clips to go with them!

I did not get lost in Oxford, nope I got swallowed up by a money making project. My summer has been a non-summer, wrapped up in number crunching and the like. A girl has to earn the cash to sustain a fabric habit, doesn't she?! And what of Madame B, I hear you ask... she disappeared too. Yup, kids, work and fingers not fit for sewing made her take a break too. But just as school goes back, we're back too.

I on my part have spent the last two days at the sewing machine. Life sometimes (very seldomly) gives you the opportunity and this time I grabbed it with both hands. I finished yet more table linen, two cushion covers and continued with Thing 1's shirt. Remember that? Now time to finish it. Pictures coming later. It seriously is too dark to be able to take decent pictures at the moment. Didn't miss much of a summer this year!
This week I am off on a little trip. There will be fabric interludes but the point is a different one. A wonderful friend (of Cadbury's fame) has treated me to a gig. She got tickets to see James in Oxford. Anyone who has know me for more than the past five years, knws my ridiculous love for this band and how I spent two wonderful years in Oxford. It is the most wonderful present someone could give to me!And one that really could have only come from about four people!!

Whilst I am getting very excited about this, I really would like to know what music means to you. Yes, everyone of you reading this.... are you someone who just listens to the radio, someone who (used) to choose their friends depending on their record collections, someone who loves classical music, someone who looses themselves in the tune and beat.... go on tell me. I'd love to know. AND if you had to pick two songs/pieces what would they be (and maybe even why)? I'd love to be inspired by your choices. Well, I have been slowly plodding along. Whenever I have a little sewing time, but no brain to do anything challenging, I have been sewing strips together.

So far I have this many. Not nicely photographed (I really only took it
to show my mum) but you get the progress. I still have a lot to do. So
far I have only used sleeves from the shirts. I am now going to sew shorter strips with
the bits that are left. I would like to keep as many of the backs as
possible, but judging by my progress so far, I don't think that is going
to happen. Will keep you posted.

YveeBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16652812010457616174noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1690145426121846618.post-66124704161461980102014-06-25T12:00:00.000-07:002014-06-25T12:00:37.448-07:00These shoes are made for walking......schon mal Schuhe genäht?

Vielleicht...)
She just mentioned it when I wished her a nice holiday (in 37°C heat). Thing Two l o v e s her and she has made him feel so secure at nursery that I felt a little present was due. But what do you give someone you only know in a nursery setting? I am sure she has enough stuff made by kids. All that stuff that is lovely when they are your own, but I imagine there is a limit to how much you want when they aren't. No handprinted mugs for her! I don't know how she decorates her house, or what kitchen implements they already have... I do know somethings, but nothing that was going to help me on my search for a quick wedding present.

Thing Two l i e b t sie.

Although many people have all the stuff they need when they get married, I still feel the presents should somehow be home-related. That is what you are building when you get married (at least in my humble opinion and at least most of the time). I wanted to sew something and thought of the kind of things I like.... always a good place to start, right? Well I reckon the sky is the limit when it comes to the amount of serviettes (napkins for all you on the other side of the pond) you can have. Really they are just an excuse for some nice fabric on your table. Upon asking I was told that she liked things colourful and not too posh.

I came home and rummaged in my stash. Why is it that there never seems to be the right fabric in there or there is the perfect fabric, but you just can't bring yourself to part with it? I rummaged and I rummaged and I thought about Thing Two's nursery teacher. Last time I saw her in a non-nursery setting she was wearing green. Clutching at straws in the hope of making something she likes, I decided on green. I opened up the box of green fabric to be greated by lots of 70s fabrics (an Ebay score which I will tell you about another day). Most of them weren't cotton and the ones that were, were very bold. Great if you know someone likes that kind of thing, not great if you don't. Then I found this provencal green and purple fabric that my mum gave me specially when I went through my long provencial phase. Somehow it had never been made into anything. Perfect... colour, not posh but still nice.

Ironed, measured and cut. I got that done fast. Being a bit of a table linen freak, I decided that they had to have mitred corners. Oh... why easy, when you can make things complicated for yourself. Anyone who knows me, knows that that is a signature trait of mine. I am going to sell it you as "teaching myself a new skill".

Autodidaktin eben!

I perused the internet for an easy pictured tutorial (I don't like videos unless it involves motion) and found this one by Erin of Sewbon. I'd never come across her before, but tada... thanks to her help
She gets six. I personally think eight is a better number but I didn't have enough fabric and Germans don't generally do things in eights. I got lucky there.
Off topic post)....you know someone has been thinking seriously about you. Life is c r a z y here at the moment. Nothing of much great matter but still all time and energy consuming. Both for Britta and I. We haven't been sewing, so there is nothing much to tell.

(Aufgepasst!
But look what I got in the post. Ahhhh... thank you lovely Cadbury's Dairy Milk sending lady! You saved my week
Inspired by lots of American ladies who sew PJs for their families for Thanksgiving/Winter solstice/Christmas, I intended to sew PJS for my own kids and my nieces and nephews. Much dithering and perusing fabric happened before I found some that would be alright for boys and for girls. Very particular little girls who I knew would want pink and not wanting to put four boys into pink PJs, I finally found some fabric that had pink and blue and other colours. I dont think it is too girlie, do you?

For the tops I picked up some t-shirts and designed a six starred pattern. The plan was that one of the stars on the t-shirt would be made of the same fabric as the bottoms. That one would be it's place in the family birth order.

So I had my design and my fabric, t-shirt, about a mile of elastic and just had to get sewing six (at the time) pairs of Pjs: a grand plan. I got started on time and then somehow life got hectic . The kids keep growing.... Only Thing One actually got his. They now fit Thing Two. I had five pairs of PJs trousers cut, some half sewn, some alright, some with mistakes and one pair that needed repairing in my UFO stash. Now I have five pairs of finished PJ bottoms and a repaired one.

Nun passen sie Thing Two.

(Here you see only four as two are already in use.

Luckily:

Thing One isn't the oldest of the six, so there are still two pairs for him to wear!

I only printed two of the t-shirts, so I can go with a simple version of the six stars (should now be seven)

Thing Two is small enough to wear nearly all of them. He is going to
remember having this one pair of PJs that grew with him throughout his
childhood. Hihihi....

Hihihihi....

Lots of us do. I have committed to not buying any new fabric until a substantial amount of my stash has been reduced. I joined a Facebook Group to help keep my promise. It's not so easy with all those tempting fabrics out there. Enough said about that. I'll come back to my stash again another day.
Right now I am trying to reduce my U(n)F(inished) Objects stash. Inspired by Prolific Project Starter's dress, I have decided to reduce those two boxes of projects to zero by mid-June. This is the reason why I have been so quiet. I have been sewing like a mad thing. Some of them only need a little bit of work and they are done, some need bits taking apart and redoing, some are just cut out and some have irreparable mistakes (at least from my point of view now). In the past week I have finished 5 pairs of PJ trousers (will be posted about later), three Christmas stockings, a bread basket, two bibs and a summer top. Yipee! More pictures to follow....

German translations will follow too for the next posts. Promise!

The original plan was to sew something for my son, again. A few trousers for the summer would have been good. The fabric is already washed, cut and ironed for two pairs. The pattern is copied and cut out cos he liked the trousers I made him back in the autumn. And then I looked in my wardrobe. It suddenly became very clear who needs new clothes in our house! For once it is me ;) Now where is that fabric?

A while ago I discovered a lovely white interlock in my favourite fabric shop. Along with some quite yellow ribbing, also bought there, I had already cut out and sewn my new shirt by the time I got home.

As I am still fighting with wavy necklines, I decided to go for leni pepunkt's "Kalte Schulter (cold shoulder). It has an off-shoulder neckline, so it wasn't going to matter too much if I didn't pull it off perfectly. And as anyone who knows me knows... I love a batwing arm. No denying my 80s heritage!

Was meint Ihr?

To the ribbing...my personal stumbling block at the moment....I had to cut it down a couple of centimeters again and to be honest, the next shirt will loose a few more too. The top went together in the blink of an eye and I (IMHO!!) think it is great! What about you?
Oliver+SThis cute little thing is a finished, useful, stash bust. Say those words slowly and if you are anything like me, you'll get my amazement.

I used all stash fabric. Sadly, you can see it on the thick denim on the main part, but then again, it will have food splattered all over it as soon as it hits the table. The bias was my first attempt at home-made bias and I am pretty chuffed about it. In it's previous life, it had been a shirt. The pocket is double lined and made from some remnants from a friend's dress. I love the fabric, but don't even know where she bought it, nevermind who made it or designed the print.

I sewed them from the Oliver+S Book, Little Things to Sew. It is the first pattern I have sewn out of it and I seriously changed it. I added the pocket, lined and backed it in toweling. The finished product feels lovely, even if it is very thick. It certainly doesn't need to be this thick. The green quick and dirty bibs do the job just fine. Next time I am sewing something like this for a gift, I would definitely come back to the pattern.

I sew stuff. A lot of stuff for the kids and for me.
Now it was time for Mr. Black stuff.
His birthday!
Because I never sewed one piece for him I decided to make a shirt.
Have you ever tried to find menswear patterns?
OMG!
It took me a loooooooooong time to find a good one...

I chose the Strathcona Henley from Thread Theory. A new menswear pattern line based in Canada.
Hopefully a safe piece!
(And I love sewing Indie patterns.)
Hmmm, but what about the sizes?
My Mr. Black is doing a lot of computer work, not cutting down trees...
So I used one of his well fitting Ts as a template and combined it with the pattern (size xs with 5/8" seam allowance).

I found a nice a stable knit in his favorite colour (yes, Mr. Black!!) and I sewed this up on my serger.
Because it was intended as a gift, not had the opportunity to let him try it on.
It was clear that it would perhaps be just a muslin.
So I decided to sew variation 2 without the placket.

He loves the colour and is has a slim fit to his liking. But I think next time I'll cut off the sleeves.
Boys' bibs. Thing Two is one mucky pup who loves his food and is still learning to get most of the food in. Fair does, it is tricky when your mum gives you soup or musli. Here is this mum's answer:

I cut them a while ago from laminated cotton from my stash. I carefully pinned one and then tried to sew it. It is a long while since I sewed anything vaguely laminated. To give me my dues, even then it was on a different machine. After the machine had chomped its way through a bit, I decided this was not the way to come out with something that satisfied even a quick and dirty sew. Well, I thought to myself, laminated fabric doesn't fray..... what about zigzagging it? For some strange reason my machine happily zigzagged it's way around these. I just carefully trimmed them around the stitching, added some cam snaps and they were ready to go. They have been tried and tested and the verdict was.... why did I wait so long?YveeBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16652812010457616174noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1690145426121846618.post-79968566959131078442014-05-08T12:41:00.000-07:002014-05-08T13:01:30.747-07:00Getting Shirty

I've been collecting my husband's (and father-in-law's) shirts since at least 2005. He loves a good blue and white checked shirt and all of the variations along the way. He wears them lightly so basically all that is the matter with them is a little fraying on the collar and cuffs. As they all seem to have collar stiffener pockets in them, there is no way to turn them. Sadly for him,.... but not for me.

I have used them for allsorts of stuff in the past including bunting. My grand plan has always involved them in a quilt. Since Thing 1's arrival the idea of a quilt for him sewn from his Dad's shirts (seeing as they are a pretty defining part of him) has tickled my heirloom, romantic family fancy. Gotta leave a girl who lives in a house full of boys stuff some romantic space! And now there is Thing 2 too and they share a room, it seems a little unfair for there only to be one.

So you have sewn many quilts before, I hear you ask. Well, now you come to mention it, the answer is yes.... two. Both started back when I was at school (don't ask how long ago that is), one finished then, one finished last year. So you see, I am predestined to whip up two quilts.

My original plan was to just hand the quilts to my Mum and ask her to do it. But then I thought it would be a much better plan to get her to teach me to sew them up. My Mum makes wonderful, bright and cheerful quilts and I would love just to be able to suck up her quilting knowledge without having to bodge a zillion before getting it right. We all know that doesn't work and that you have to practise yourself before you can do it yourself. So I decided that there was no other way that to get stuck in.

I was given this lovely book
